Cello Dialogues

International Day of the Cello and Cello Musicians is celebrated on 29th December. The date of the unofficial holiday was not chosen by chance, because it was on this day that maestro Pablo Casals was born a Catalan cellist, composer, conductor and public figure.

Today, Turkmen cellists spoke about how popular the ancient musical instrument, known since the first half of the 16th century, and their creative profession were.

It turned out that for the most part it is not the musician who chooses the cello, but the instrument that chooses the future cellist. So it happened with the teacher of the Ashgabat music school Oksana Rozyeva, whom her parents brought to a music school as a child, and there was a shortage in the cellist class.

From that memorable moment to this day, the cellist has never parted with the instrument. She not only plays in the State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Rasul Klychev, but also teaches the art of playing the cello to children.

“At first it was hard to get used to an instrument that was almost the same height as a child,” says Oksana Rozyeva. But now I can say with confidence: “Thank you, my dear parents!” Thanks to their concern for our future, we become musicians.

The cello opened the world for me, I went on tour in different countries, and I learned to combine business with pleasure. The instrument has long gone beyond the basic set in an orchestra, and today cellists also play solo parts.

Speaking about the cello in the context of the leading instrument, one cannot but recall bright concert of honored artist of Russia, rector of the St.Petersburg Conservatory, cellist Alexei Vasiliev, which took place in March this year in Ashgabat.

Cello music always and everywhere finds its admirers, because an instrument with a deep timbre conveys a special mood of lyrical and dramatic musical works.

“The sound of the cello is considered the voice of the soul,” says Yusup Gandymov, a teacher at the Department of String Instruments at the Turkmen National Conservatory.

Since childhood, I have combined violin lessons with cello, but when the moment came to choose between two stringed instruments, without hesitation, I gave preference to the cello. And I still do not regret my choice.

I like the lyricism of the sound, whether it is a large orchestra or a solo part, the cello will not go unnoticed by the ear.

Playing the cello develops an ear for music, memory, logical and creative thinking, and the repertoire for the instrument is very diverse. Cellists have the opportunity to play in string and chamber ensembles, the possibilities of the instrument are literally inexhaustible.

“Of course, in order to master the cello, maximum concentration and perseverance are required,” warns Okasana Rozyeva. But these volitional qualities will be useful in the study of any musical instrument. To all my student cellists, I wish you patience, stable studies and development. Listen to more classical and cello music.

From all that has been said, it follows that the cello has its own expressive “voice”. She is an integral part of symphony and string orchestras, and also sounds original as part of a chamber ensemble. Many outstanding composers Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Mikhail Glinka, Louis Abbiate and others wrote their works for the solo cello.

Pablo Casals, in whose honor the International Cello Day was established, simply adored his instruments; the musician even inserted a sapphire donated by the Queen of Spain into one of his bows. But the most expensive instrument is still the cello of the French musician Jean Louis Duport, created by the great Antonio Stradivari in 1711.
