British surgeons give life to girl with half a heart

Doctors in the UK have successfully performed a complex operation to save the life of a child with a serious congenital heart defect, runews24.ru reports with reference to Doctorpiter.ru.

The little patient was diagnosed with a rare defect - only half of the heart was functioning. This diagnosis was made in the 20th week of pregnancy and was confirmed after the girl was born. Due to the anomaly, blood did not flow to the lungs, which posed a serious threat to the life of the newborn.

When the baby was five weeks old, a team of highly skilled surgeons performed a unique operation. They redirected the blood flow so that the left side of the heart began to perform the functions of the right. Postoperative treatment included special therapy to improve the heart's function.

Today, two years after the operation, Hope (that's the girl's name) looks like a completely healthy and active child. Her mother notes with admiration that looking at her daughter now, it is impossible to imagine what she had to go through.
