Blocking of VPN in Turkmenistan; “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” newsletter

For over a week VPN applications as well as various Internet resources and services have been inaccessible in Turkmenistan.

Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that two days ago even Ashgabat offices of international organizations were experiencing problems with Skype.

Sources at “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” assume that the reason for access failures is the deliberate blocking by the authorities rather than technical issues. This explanation is indirectly supported by the fact that the connection speed in the evenings, which used to be extremely low, has now reached the maximum, i.e.

the workload on networks has eased.

An IT specialist told a correspondent of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” that this could explain the blocking.

Such wide-spread Internet disconnection has generated many rumours, from the installation of new Internet controlling equipment to serious developments in Turkmenistan which the authorities try to keep controlled by any means.

In the meantime official websites of the US Embassy and of the British Ambassador Hugh Philpott continue to post their messages on Facebook, which suggests that diplomatic missions have uncensored Internet access.

Cutting off access to VPN applications deprives Turkmen residents of the opportunity to access information from independent sources.Website Traffic to “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” has dropped by 50 to 70% over the past few days.

Regrettably, there is no way to ensure direct access to “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” or other independent websites, but information can be disseminating information to Turkmenistan using other methods.
