Azerbaijan Bans Production, Sale of Disposable Plastic Tableware

Azerbaijan banned the import and production of disposable plastic products such as forks, spoons, knives, plates, and cups by businesses starting July 1, Azerbaijan’s APA news agency reports with reference to the amendment made to Law of Azerbaijan on Environmental Protection.

The sale of these products and their use while rendering services in trade and catering facilities is also prohibited.

According to the law, it is prohibited for businesses to import, produce and sell or give to consumers plastic polyethylene bags up to 15 microns thick, as well as disposable plastic sticks, forks, spoons, knives, plates, and cups.

Provisions of the law on polyethylene bags came into force on January 1, 2021, while the provisions regarding disposable plastic tableware came into force from July 1.

The fines for violators could reach up to 4,000 Azerbaijani manats ($2,350).
