At the international conference CIET-2024, Vladimir Petruk, Managing Director of the Interbudmontazh company, spoke about the prospects for building a metro in Ashgabat. The idea of creating a metro was first voiced in February 2014 by the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during a visit to the Interbudmontazh CA.
According to Petruk, specialists from the Japanese company Sumitomo, the Japanese Metro Association and the German consulting group K2 worked on assessing the possibility of construction. Over ten months of research, experts studied the geological conditions and seismic activity of the region, confirming the technical feasibility of construction provided that reinforced concrete structures are used.
According to the concept, the Ashgabat metro should become an environmentally friendly transport solution that in the future can connect the capital with the smart city of Arkadag, Geokdepe in the west and Anau in the east. The expected date for the appearance of the metro is 2035.
Considering the growing prosperity of the population and the increase in the number of cars on the city streets, the metro will be the only effective solution to transport problems in the future, Vladimir Petruk emphasized, noting the successful experience of operating metros in 36 countries located in seismic zones.
Currently, work is underway with the Ministry of Construction and Architecture of Turkmenistan, and it is also planned to discuss the issue with the UN mission within the framework of the urban infrastructure development program.
The Interbudmontazh company, which has significant experience in underground construction, expressed its readiness to participate in the implementation of the project aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens.
