Ashgabat, Kabul Mull Joint Use of Transboundary Water Resources

The Coordination Commission on Water Management Issues between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan held its fourth meeting in a video conference format on Sunday, the TDH news agency reports.

The Turkmen side included representatives of the State Committee for Water Resources and the State Border Service. The Afghan side was chaired by the Deputy Minister of Water Resources of Afghanistan for Technical Issues and National Water Regulation Department Weiss Ahmad Basiri.

The meeting participants mainly discussed interaction between the specialized departments of the two countries on the coordinated use of the Amu Darya, Murghab and Tejen rivers.

According to the report, the relevance of this topic is due to the fact that in Central Asia, the main sources of water resources for agriculture and industry, electricity production, and supply of drinking water to the population are rivers. Practically all of the rivers - Amu Darya, Murghab, Tejen, Sumbar and Etrek - are transboundary.

The meeting participants spoke in favor of further strengthening and developing cooperation between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan in the field of joint use of transboundary water resources in accordance with the provisions of international law and mutual consideration of the interests of the parties.

The officials signed a relevant protocol following the meeting.
