Ashgabat and Yerevan intend to restore trade turnover which collapsed by 30%

Following the negotiations with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov in Yerevan, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan said that the trade turnover between Armenia and Turkmenistan needs to be increased, speaking about the fall in trade volumes between the two countries by 30% (up to $12 mln), according to the media outlet “Bulletin of Caucasus”.

Special attention at the meeting was paid to prospects of developing cooperation in trade and tourism.Regrettably, the unfavourable situation on global markets also affected our trade turnover.

In this context we discussed possible ways of boosting bilateral economic cooperation and expanding new horizons for collaboration.Hopefully the implementation of the agreements reached today will enable to remedy the situation”, he said.

Before Serzh Sargsyan proposed to focus on joint projects and high tech. “In the context of developing economy, tourism and human contact we discussed possibilities of launching a direct flight between the capitals of the two countries.

We are ready to provide our Turkmen friends with a package of incentives which are envisaged by the “open sky policy”.Certain prospects open up in agriculture.We hope that our Turkmen partners will participate in the free trade zone which will be established in Armenia on the border with Iran”, the President of Armenia said.

Berdymukhammedov just highlighted the potential for trade growth. “Like Armenia Turkmenistan has a great potential. I believe it can be used in various directions. Needless to say, this primarily applies to trade, energy, agriculture, textile industry and healthcare”, the President of Turkmenistan stated.
