Apple employees accuse the company of gender pay inequality

Apple employees Justina Chong and Amina Salgado filed a lawsuit in San Francisco, alleging that the company systematically underpays women.

The plaintiffs accuse Apple of violating state equal pay laws.

They claim that they earn thousands of dollars less by performing the same job duties as men.

Jeong, who worked at Apple for more than 10 years, gives an example: for the same job, she is paid 10 000 USD per year less than her male colleague.

Salgado, after going to management with the results of her own investigation into inequality, achieved a salary increase only after the intervention of an outside organization.

According to the applicants, discrimination is due to a biased job evaluation system that underestimates the achievements of women. For example, they are given bonuses less often than men.

Another problem is the non-transparent system for determining salaries for new employees. Apple is targeting their expectations and pay levels at previous jobs, which Jeong and Salgado say “perpetuates historical pay inequalities between men and women”.
