“2021 was a very difficult year due to the global spread of the novel coronavirus infection, but despite this, relations between Japan and Turkmenistan have been steadily developing, as evidenced by the events of the year.

In particular, the Olympic Games in Tokyo were successfully held in July, and we heard the good news that the athlete Polina Guryeva, who competed in women's weightlifting, won the first Olympic medal (silver) in the sports history of Turkmenistan.

In September, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Ejima Kiyoshi visited Turkmenistan.Political exchanges between Japan and Turkmenistan are developing favorably. In the economic sphere, in September, the opening ceremony of a gas turbine power plant in the Charjou etrap of Lebap velayat, built in cooperation with Japan, was held, in which Mr.

Ejima took part. The power plant efficiently processes Turkmen natural gas using Japanese technologies and supplies electricity not only within the country, but also to Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.

In addition, during the visit of Vice - Premier Serdar Berdimuhamedov to Japan, documents were signed on projects for the supply of KOMATSU construction equipment and TOYOTA taxis/buses to Turkmenistan.

Within the framework of bilateral cooperation, in March, the signing ceremony of exchange notes on grant assistance for the provision of medical equipment in the amount of 3 million US dollars from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) was held, and in December the ceremony of handing over the first batch of medical equipment took place.

From May to June, within the framework of grant assistance from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), a training program “Risk Analysis and Methods of Searching for and Detecting Drugs” was conducted for law enforcement officials in Turkmenistan.

At the end of June, a ceremony was held to hand over Nissan Patrol cars to the border service of Turkmenistan within the framework of a grant from the Japanese government “Measures to Combat Organized Crime, Drug Trafficking and Terrorism”.

In the area of combating coronavirus infection, JICA has held several online seminars for healthcare professionals. In 2021, despite the restrictions due to coronavirus infection, from February to March, we were able to hold an exhibition of Japanese dolls, and in May - a Japanese language competition.

In addition, the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) was held in July and December.

2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Turkmenistan. This year we are planning to hold many events, including large-scale cultural events, timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary. I would like that, taking this opportunity, all Turkmen people would enjoy getting to know the culture and art of Japan.

I intend to continue making every effort to develop friendly relations between Japan and Turkmenistan. I hope for your support and cooperation.”
