A student from Turkmenistan goes missing during fighting in Ukraine

Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that a citizen of Turkmenistan Serdar Annaorazov, a senior student of the University named after Admiral Makarov in the city of Mykolaiv has gone missing in Ukraine.

Serdar last called his parents in Ashgabat on 28 February. He said that for three days he had been taking shelter from the shelling in the basement together with his friends. All this time they did not eat anything and planned to find some groceries. After that Serdar did not respond to phone calls.

Serdar’s mother managed to reach one of his friends K. From Bezmein, who was in the basement with Serdar. He said that he, Serdar and another young man from Dashoguz left the basement in search of bread and water.

It should be mentioned that fierce fighting took place in Mykolaiv region on this date.

According to K.’s reports, they were stopped by the military men who claimed that they were the soldiers of the Russian army.They checked the young men’s documents and enquired whether they were spies and whether they would like to surrender. К.

and his friend from Dashoguz answered in the affirmative.Serdar said that he did not take part in any military actions and was not going to fight on anyone’s side because he was simply doing a course of studies there.

According to K., sacks were then put on their heads and they heard rifle shots. They were taken somewhere. When the sacks were removed, only the guy from Dashoguz was there. When asked where Serdar was, the soldier did not reply and advised them to go back to the basement and be quiet.

Serdar’s friends did not see his body and they cannot confirm that he was killed. Some time later K. stopped taking calls.

Serdar’s parents contacted Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry with a request to find their son. According to staff of the diplomatic mission, they sent an enquiry to Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry and received a reply that it is currently impossible to get any information about their son’s fate.

It was reported that after the hostilities had broken out in Ukraine Turkmen nationals in tried to find their own means of evacuation. They are leaving Ukraine via Romania and then from Bulgaria are heading to Turkey.

On 1 March, 2022 several Turkmen nationals arrived in Istanbul from Ukraine. It was also reported that one Turkmen national was killed in Kharkiv, Ukraine and another was injured.

In early March 10 Turkmen nationals, including a woman with a 9 month child, crossed the Ukrainian-Romanian border and tried to seek assistance in the Refugee Centre in the city of Focșani.

Another 25 year old citizen of Turkmenistan, who had sustained a leg and arm injuries, was admitted to hospital in the Romania city of Sighetu Marmației.
