General population and housing census is scheduled to be held in Turkmenistan in 2022. The campaign will be organized in the framework of the resolution “The 2020 World Population and Housing Census Programme”, adopted by the United Nations Economic and Social Council on 10 June 2015.
The state information agency TDH reports that a government commission will be established to conduct the census.
“The results of the forthcoming initiative are needed to adjust social and economic policy the pursued by the government.The census results will serve as a basis for undertaking measures in the social and economic area and must be taken into account when the budgets of all level, including the state budget are made”, — the news outlet reports.
The population census was last held in Turkmenistan in 2012 but its results have not been published so far and all references to it have been deleted from the website of the State Statistics Committee.
At the same time, the website of the Central Bank still keeps data on issuance of commemorative coins timed to coincide with the 2012 census.
The results of the census became known to “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” in 2015. According to them, the population of the country as of 2012 was less than 5 million, or 4 751 120 people to be more precise.
