On 26 February an 8 year old pupil Orazdurdy Babayev went missing in Ashgabat but was found the next day.
According to the boy, a 3rd grader of Ashgabat school №32, he was going home after classes when a car pulled up and a woman offered to give him a lift home.
Orazdurdy, who has poor health and poor eyesight, thought that these were his neighbours and got into the car.The woman gave him a banana.
The boy only remembers that a man in a cap was behind the wheel and there was a school bag on the back seat.
He woke up on the wasteland on the outskirts of the city and wandered towards the houses in the distance. Getting to a shop, Orazdurdy asked for water and some bread. The shop assistant saw the child’s condition and r called the police. Law enforcement officers from the Kopetdag police department responded to the call.
After establishing Orazdurdy’s name, his place of study and other personal details, the police officers took him to Bagtyyarlyk police department, where his mother had submitted a report about the missing child the day before.
The mother, called Lachin, was summoned to the police station and her son was handed over.However, the law enforcement officers refused to initiate criminal charges and urged the woman not to tell anyone about the incident.
She was warned that her husband, the boy’s father, would be dismissed and unable to find a job (the police officers had made enquiries about him in advance).
In addition, the school librarian demanded that the cost of three textbooks be reimbursed. The textbooks were in the boy’s backpack which had been misplaced. The parents were informed that each textbook costs 200 manats and were asked to pay 600 manats. The family does not have this amount of money.
It is unknown who kidnapped the child or why they did so.
