Every year, in the run-up to International Women’s Day celebrated on 8 March, the Turkmen authorities make announcements about providing mothers of many children with apartments, correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report.
Television footage shows families moving in to their new accommodation but in reality it depends on officials and the Department of Housing Distribution. It is impossible to obtain accommodation without a bribe.
Three years ago an apartment in block №19 in the residential district of Parakhat 7/1, Ashgabat was allocated to a family with eight children. However, the family has still not moved in.
During this time the head of the family died and the woman currently lives in a one-room apartment with all the children. Her applications to the municipal khyakimlik’s office and other agencies remain unanswered.
This is not an isolated case.
In the meantime, on 7 March all public sector employees were paid their February salaries and reminded to vote for Serdar Berdymukhammedov in the 12 March election.
“Chronicles of Turkmenistan” previously reported that in late February the administrations of the Turkmen provinces received instructions from Ashgabat to pay all February salaries, retirement benefits and allowances as well as monetary gifts to women on the occasion of International Women’s Day by 10 March.
Apart from salaries, women employed in education and healthcare areas in Farap and Dyanev etraps were paid 60 manats ($3 at the “black” market rate) as a gift on behalf of the President.
In some organizations women were presented with a bar of chocolate and one plastic flower together with the money. They were also encouraged to vote for the President’s son.
